Zelenskyy Claims Putin Sought Talks After Cruise Missile Discussions

Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared during his trip to Washington that Vladimir Putin's move to seek negotiations with Donald Trump indicates the Kremlin is on the defensive. Zelenskyy commented, "It's evident that Moscow is rushing to restart dialogue as soon as it learns of Tomahawks." This statement referred to earlier musings about supplying advanced weapons to Ukraine.

Diplomatic Moves and International Reactions

An ex- American diplomat, Dan Fried, commented, "Putin is attempting to disrupt the progress toward greater pressure on the Kremlin." He added, "The outcome will become clear tomorrow, but the chances of achieving a ceasefire by pushing Russia to engage sincerely appear to have decreased."

This situation came after Trump had in recent days been strengthening his rhetoric toward Moscow until the recent call with Putin, which the Kremlin described as "highly open and trustful."

European Energy Sanctions and Market Impact

EU authorities have established a mandate for fuel importers into the EU to demonstrate their products are not made from Russian oil, according to a official guideline published on Thursday. This measure is part of the EU's forthcoming prohibition on purchases of fuels made from Russian petroleum, which forms part of its latest sanctions package against Moscow over its military actions in the region.

Market analysts noted that trading activity appeared to be considering the potential end of Indian imports of Russian oil. Several oil processors in India are getting ready to cut purchases from Russia, with expectations of a phased reduction, according to sources familiar with the matter.

"This represents a favorable turn for the oil market as it would remove a major customer of Russian crude," commented Tony Sycamore, noting that crude values were steady on Thursday.

Military Developments and Energy Strikes

A massive Moscow's unmanned aircraft and missile attack hit gas facilities in Ukraine's eastern regions on the same day, causing disruptions in multiple regions. Authorities in Ukraine reported that Russian forces launched numerous of drones and many of projectiles, along with aerial munitions.

"During this fall, the Russians use daily opportunities to strike at our power facilities," said Ukraine's president, noting that attacks impacted the areas of Chernihiv, eastern Ukraine, central Ukraine, Sumy and western Ukraine.

Global Diplomatic Reactions

Kyiv's representative to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, stated that Russia demonstrated its true approach to peace through the "violence" of these attacks. "Russia yet again chose weapons over dialogue, turning this assault into a direct setback to current peace efforts," Stefanishyna commented.

Meanwhile, the EU's top diplomat, the bloc's representative, stated that the European Union had no choice but to strengthen anti-drone defences against Russia. She revealed a "roadmap" to prepare for possible conflict by the end of the decade, including a new defensive network to be completely functional by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, called the "EU defensive program," is expected to start operations in its first phase by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the following year. EU authorities aims to obtain the support of EU leaders at a meeting in the coming days.
